Canadian Counter-Tariffs Take Effect🔒
Effective September 8, 2026, the Government of Canada imposed counter-tariffs on $27.6 billion in imports from the United States in response to the U.S. Section 338 tariffs that took effect on August 22.

U.S. Section 338 Tariffs Update and Government Contact for Members🔒
As of August 22, the United States implemented 50% tariffs on a wide range of Canadian products under Section 338 of the U.S. Tariff Act, including cartons, boxes and cases of corrugated paper or paperboard and other paper packaging products. The tariffs took effect after Canada-U.S. trade negotiations ended without an agreement.

British Columbia Government Pauses Proposal for EPR for IC&I
The British Columbia government has paused policy work on potentially expanding Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging and paper to the Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (IC&I) sector. While the Ministry has indicated the proposal may be revisited in the future, PPEC is encouraged by this development, as it reflects our position that existing commercial systems for paper should be recognized and not disrupted by additional regulatory requirements.

New Statistics Canada Data Shows Paper Fibre is Most Diverted Packaging Material
New Statistics Canada data shows Canadians diverted 8.6 million tonnes of material in 2024. Paper fibre accounted for 2.88 million tonnes, or approximately 34% of the total, making it the largest diverted category among measured packaging materials.
